Hospital or Birth Center Packing list

Planning a Hospital or Birth Center Birth?

Here is a list of supplies you may find helpful to add to your birth bag.

For You

  • Oil or massage lotion (corn starch may be helpful too)

  • Lip balm

  • Hygiene Supplies (Toothbrush/toothpaste, Hair comb, deodorant, Etc..)

  • Gowns, T- Shirts, a robe, if preferred rather than birthing in a hospital gown

  • “Going home” clothes; Something comfortable (sweater, T-shirt, socks, underwear, comfortable pants)

  • Massage device or hot/cold pack for pain relief

  • Hair-ties, clips, bobby pins, ect.. for keeping hair out of the face

  • warm socks and slippers

  • warm blanket or shawl

  • Breast-pump (if applicable)

  • A “Labor Playlist” of preferred music, or sound machine

  • Personal comfort items (Pillow, flowers, pictures, battery power candles, diffusers, etc..)

  • Favorite juices, frozen juices, electrolyte based drinks (based on hospital policy)

  • Birth ball (some hospitals may provide)

  • Facility consent forms (Ask for consent forms ahead of time so you can read through them thoroughly and do not have to sign them during labor.

For Partner

  • Copy of birth plan or birth preferences

  • Watch with second hand, or contraction timer app.

  • Grooming supplies (toothbrush, comb, deodorant, etc..)

  • Snacks (sandwiches, fruit, cheese and crackers, beverages; Consider what they will do to your breath)

  • Sweater

  • Change of clothes

  • Slippers

  • Swimsuit; If shower or tub during labor is an option

  • Reading material, game apps, hand work, for slow times of labor

  • phone numbers of people to call during or after labor

  • Camera or video camera

  • Phone or electronic chargers

  • Cash or wallet

For Baby

  • Clothing for going home ( Bring different sizes just in case such as Preemie, Newborn, and/or 0-3 depending on size prediction)

  • Receiving blanket

  • outer clothing (hat, gloves, socks)

  • Properly installed car seat
